Exam Preparation

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI):

DO NOT WEAR any clothing containing metal into the MRI Suite (i.e. zippers, buttons, hooks, underwire brassiere, etc.)  DO NOT WEAR any jewelry into the MRI Suite.         PATIENTS WITH PACEMAKERS OR CEREBRAL ANEURYSM CLIPS CANNOT UNDERGO MRI SCANNING.

PLEASE NOTE:  Please inform the technologist if you have ever worked with metal, especially metal grinding.  If your eyes have ever been exposed to metal fragments, you may first need to have an X-ray to check for metal before being exposed to MRI.


COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT):

CT Abdomen:  Nothing by mouth after midnight.

CT Pelvis and CT Abdomen & Pelvis: Nothing by mouth after midnight except, drink Readi-Cat 3 hours prior to exam.

NOTE:  If you are having a CT exam which requires IV contrast, all medications containing METFORMIN (Glucophage), must be discontinued 48 hours prior to, and 48 hours after the IV study.


ULTRASOUND:

Abdominal: Nothing is to be taken by mouth, including water, for 12 hours prior to the exam.  Do not smoke.

Pelvic or OB: A full bladder is necessary for the exam.  Beginning 90 minutes before your appointment time, drink 60 oz. of fluids (approximately 6 glasses of water).  DO NOT drink carbonated beverages.  DO NOT EMPTY YOUR BLADDER until after the exam is completed.


MAMMOGRAPHY:

DO NOT WEAR powder, perfume, deodorant, oils or any bath products on or near the breast.  This includes underarm.


BONE DENSITOMETRY:
NO Barium or Nuclear Medicine Studies 1 week prior to the exam date.  NO vitamins, Fosomax, antacids, antigas (tablets or liquids), or calcium supplements taken the day of the exam.


FLUOROSCOPY:

Barium Swallow:  Nothing by mouth after midnight.

Upper GI: Nothing by mouth after midnight.

B.E. with or without air:  Follow Fleet Prep Kit instructions.  24 hour prep is preferred if time permits.  DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING THE DAY OF THE EXAM.

I.V.P.: Follow Fleet Prep Kit instructions.  18 hour prep is preferred.  Nothing by mouth after midnight.  NOTE:  If you are having an I.V.P. exam, all medications containing METFORMIN (Glucophage) must be discontinued 48 hours prior to, and 48 hours after the IV study.
